"The doctor of the future will give no medicine,

But will interest his patients in the care of the human frame."

 - Thomas Edison circa 1860

Foods Heal and Not Drugs

Up to now, the main focus of modern medicine has been on developing patentable drugs to treat symptoms of disease for profit. The pharmaceutical industry has become so powerful that natural medicine using foods/herbs for cure is prohibited from making any health claim. The Food and Drug Acts in the US and Canada only allowed drugs to have health claim. In recent years, they are allowing limited functional claims on food for active ingredients such as vitamin C and calcium. This health claim regulation is not for promoting natural foods, but for helping the food manufacturing industry to sell junk foods by fortifying them with added nutrients.

When western doctors prescribe medicine/drug, patients are expected to take the medicine for life. Drugs are for suppressing symptoms and have many known and unknown side effects. Recent studies conducted by the Health Council of Canada reported on November 17, 2010 that drug sided effects often go unreported. It is common practice for doctors to prescribe more drugs to counter the adverse effects of drugs used. Over time, treating the side effects of drug interaction can over vamp the treatment of the original health problem. Long term use of drugs can impair our body to restore and heal naturally.

Most pharmaceutical drugs were designed to treat disease symptoms only. Symptoms of disease are signs of our body’s attempt to heal itself. They are seldom the root problem. One typical example is runny noise when having a cold or flu. It is the body’s natural defence mechanism to clean out the virus. Stopping the runny noise will only help the virus to multiply and go internal which can cause much bigger problems. People can die from flu when viruses gone deep inside the body.

Degenerative conditions account for well over 80% of all diseases today. This means that it is not the diseases that should be treated but the weakening of underlying metabolic functions. The many ancient systems of medicine such as the Ayurveda, Chinese, Egyptian and Greek; they treat patients by reinforcing their body constitution first before addressing the symptoms of disease. They all treat degenerative conditions by using nutrition to strengthen the body instead of using drugs.

Today, many people are spending big in medicines and supplements to improve their health. We believe little medicine is better than more. It is because the cocktail of pills that people are putting into their body are creating confusion to the body cells. What our body needs is essential nutrients from whole food that it can understand and digest. The simpler the nutritional signal, the easier it is for our body cells to understand, respond, absorb and use.

Nature is truly the world’s oldest and best pharmacist. Mainstream scientists always reach back to the truths of ancient folk medicine and dietary practices for clues to find remedies and antidotes. But many nutritional researches today are for finding and isolating key ingredient in order to develop synthetic and patentable drugs for profit. As intended by nature, whole food contains a virtual pharmacy of nutrients, phytochemicals, enzymes, fiber, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, anti-inflammatory agents and healthful fats that are bundled together as whole in one package. When foods are eaten in whole, all the different parts will create synergistic effects and health benefits which are absent in drugs. That is why nutrition is key and real foods often have many times the healing benefits than drugs and should be used as the foundation for healing. Unfortunately, natural nutrition and a body known to be capable of healing itself do not generate tremendous profit for any group of professionals, nor for any kind of industry. That explains why nobody is promoting it front and center.

Many people now are relying heavily on supplements as a way to make up for a poor diet, which is not the best approach. As CNN reported on April 13, 2011:  "While some are helpful, supplements can't entirely replace proper nutrition ... "

In the ongoing war between alternative medicine and the Orthodox medicine in treating cancer; the results have been consistent in showing that the nutritional approach is far more cost effective in evicting cancer than using toxins (chemotherapy and radiation) to kill cancer. Unfortunately, this message will put the whole cancer industry which is worth trillions of dollars in jeopardy and the Orthodox medicine will never accept that. But the truth is everything in our bodies comes from our diet and if we do not have good nutritional foundation, our bodies just cannot perform properly. Avoid using toxin and cleaning our bodies of accumulated toxic load should be the first and foremost thing to do in any treatment protocol.

Science has already confirmed that increased consumption of foods rich in plant carotenes is associated with reduced risk of cancer. Increased consumption of omega-3 fatty acids, particularly from plant sources, is strongly associated with reduced risk of heart disease. Omega-3 fatty acids may also reduce risk of depression and schizophrenia. Increased consumption of unrefined plant foods, particularly fruit and vegetables, nuts, seeds and whole grains, is associated with wide-ranging health benefits which can promote longer and healthier life.

Functional food knowledge is the missing link that is most needed for people today to protect and promote health. It is only smart to pay attention to all the news about the benefits of foods and go straight to consume the real thing rather than the processed ones in capsule or pill form. It is by far better for your health and your pocket book too!

Food Sources for Selenium

Several research reports indicate the inverse relationship between higher blood levels of selenium and mortality from cancer including lung, colorectal, prostate and skin cancer. Laboratory studies indicate the potentially beneficial role of selenium in the management of mammary cancer.

Based on epidemiological data, a lower antioxidant status has been linked to higher incidence of cardiovascular diseases due to increased levels of LDL oxidation. Selenium is one of the antioxidants that may help to inhibit LDL oxidation.

Selenium is also reported to play a role in reducing the oxidative stress associated with diabetes, thereby retarding the progression of the secondary complications of diabetes such as neuropathy, retinopathy and cataracts.

Low selenium status has been associated with the incidence of arthritis. Preliminary studies indicate the beneficial role of selenium as a free radical scavenger that may delay the progression of arthritis.

Low plasma selenium status has been associated with senility and cognitive decline in the elderly and with Alzheimer’s disease. Selenium supplementation was observed to reduce the severity of epileptic seizures in children. Selenium supplementation is also reported to improve confused and depressed mental states; mental fatigue and anxiety in adults.

Organ meats like chicken livers or turkey and chicken giblets have a lot of selenium. One chicken liver will give you 140 micrograms of selenium. Three ounces of cooked beef have 35 mcg. One medium egg has 14 mcg of selenium. An ounce of walnuts has 5 micrograms.  A cup of almonds gives you 2.5 mcg. One single Brazil nut eaten right out of the shell will provide you with 100 mcg of selenium.
