Bitter Melon Stir-fry


All symptoms of diabetes


Regulate blood sugar.


  • Bitter Melon 苦瓜- one
  • Chicken/beef/fish/mushroom – 150gm
  • Minced ginger – one spoon
  • Minced garlic – one spoon
  • Black bean paste 豆豉醬 – optional
  • Onion – one
  • Goji-berry / Chinese Wolfberry 枸杞子 – one spoon

1.   Wash bitter melon, cup open into halves horizontally and use a spoon to scrape clean seeds and white membrane in the middle. Cut each half lengthwise again into two. Then slice each piece thinly on an angle into thin slices.

2.   Boil two cups of water in a pan or wok and add one spoon of salt and one spoon of sugar. Add bitter melon to boil for about 2 minutes, remove and strain.

3.   Cut onion into halves and then slice thinly.  Soak goji-berries for 20 minutes and rinse clean. 

4.   Wash and cut meat of choice into thin slices and season to taste (soy sauce, cooking wine, corn starch and oil).

5.   Heat up one spoon of oil in a pan or wok and then add ginger, garlic and black bean paste to stir for one minute. Then add meat to stir until almost cook. Add onion, bitter melon and goji-berrries, and sprinkle in two spoons of cooking wine, two spoons of water and one spoon of oyster sauce and stir and let it cook until onion is done

6.   Mix one tea spoon of cornstarch with a little water and add to the cooking. Then add one spoon of sesame oil to mix and serve. Eat with meal.
