Allergies

Food allergies and seasonal allergies are becoming more common among most people. An allergy is an exaggerated immune response or reaction to substances such as dust, food, insect bites, mold, pollen or pet dander. The immune system normally protects the body against harmful substances, such as bacteria and viruses. It also reacts to foreign substances called allergens, which are generally harmless and in most people do not cause a problem. Both genes and environmental factors play a role.

In a person with allergies, the immune response is oversensitive. When it recognizes an allergen, it releases chemicals such as histamines, which fight off the allergen. This causes allergy symptoms. Some people have allergy-like reactions to hot or cold temperatures, sunlight, or other environmental triggers. Sometimes, friction, rubbing or roughly stroking the skin will cause symptoms. Allergies may make certain medical conditions such as sinus problems, eczema, and asthma worse.

A specific allergy is not usually passed down through families or inherited. However, if both your parents have allergies, you are likely to have allergies.

The treatment of allergies in Chinese medicine is to help the body or the immune system to tolerate the allergens instead of cutting it out completely which is the common approach used in western medicine. It is a more practical and sustainable approach and you will not have to cut out foods that have excellent benefits for health.

Acne

Acne is the excessive sebum that has blocked the pores of the skin. It can be due to hormone disorder, constipation, stress, inappropriate nutrition, emotional trauma, or allergy.

Acne occurs on the face, the chest and the back. Keeping the skin clean by washing with soup will help to prevent inflammation. Reduce the intake of fat, salt, and sugar and focus on fruits, vegetable and fiber would help but only fruit and vegetable diet will result in dull skin because the skin needs animal protein to increase its elasticity. Sardines, rich in protein and high in omega-3 essential fatty acid, are effective in firming up skin, adding elasticity and brightness. Chicken meat or lean pork or beef to cook with corn into thick soup would be beneficial to skin. Adequate sleep is also very important in preventing the eruption of skin.

Eczema

Eczema is a long-term (chronic) skin disorder that involves scaly and itchy rashes. Eczema is due to a hypersensitivity reaction (similar to an allergy) in the skin, which leads to long-term swelling and redness (inflammation) of the skin. People with eczema may lack certain proteins in the skin, which leads to greater sensitivity.

Chinese medicine regards eczema or skin rashes as having too much heat in the blood that is causing disharmony. Cooling herbal teas are used to treat acne and eczema.

White sesame seeds, almond and pine seeds can lubricate skin and improve softness. Walnut and soybean can increase the brightness of skin and have anti-wrinkle properties. Seafood, spicy food and oily food should be avoided because they are bad for skin. Light diet with lots of vegetables and fruits can cool blood and promote faster and easier bowel movement which can remove toxins faster and improve skin problems.
