Stomach Disease

The common symptoms for stomach problems are gas, bloat, cramps, diarrhea, constipation and nausea. Chinese medicine finds stomach problems largely due to cold spleen or excessive heat, indigestion, energy stagnation and blood coagulation. Treatments focus on regulating qi, relieve pain, remove blood stasis, purging excesses and addressing deficiencies.

Food allergies, unhygienic food, inadequate enzyme function, swallowed air, weak digestion, ulcers, diverticulitis, appendicitis, kidney disease, gallbladder stones, pancreatitis and liver malfunction are the usual causes of stomach problems found by western doctors.

Indigestion can be a disorder in the stomach or in the intestines. Symptoms include gas, abdominal pain, rumbling noises, a bloated feeling, belching nausea, vomiting and heart burn are most common. Swallowing air while eating, over eating of hard to digest foods, lack of digestive enzymes, stress, anxiety, worry, alcoholism and drug abuse can all lead to digestion problems.

Constant dieting  and irregular eating pattern could harm the normal functioning of the digestive system. Prolong digestive disorder could lead to other health problems because when the system is not able to turn food effectively into nutrient to feed other parts of the body, the malnourished parts will become sick and dysfunction. Usually the kidneys will be the first to be affected.

Papaya, peppermint, aloe vera, ginger, pineapple, fresh parsley and tofu are good for digestion. Sip one tablespoon of pure apple cider vinegar after meal will help digestion. Fresh ginger can promote movement of intestines which facilitate digestion. Congee is best for nursing stomach ache due to indigestion. Mixing two spoons of honey with warm water and drink before meal can improve digestion and prevent stomach pain.

Stomach pain

Stomach pain can be due to over indulgence of cold and raw food causing obstruction to the normal flow of qi. Deficient-yang in the spleen and dysfunction of stomach in transporting fluids and nutrients, and failure of stomach qi to descend and stomach yin-deficiency causing indigestion. Treatments are to warm the stomach, regulate qi and circulation, nourish yin, and harmonize the stomach. Herbs commonly used are astragalus, ginseng, ginger, cyperus and pinellia.

Yellow color food such as soy bean can improve digestive function. Sweet taste also promotes digestion. Late summer with extreme heat and dampness can easily affect the stomach system. Avoid excessive cold food and eat more diuretic food to get rid of dampness is important in maintaining stomach health and balance in summer.

Diarrhea can be due to stomach flu, stress, bacterial infection, and parasite or food allergies. People suffering from diarrhea are advised to avoid dairy product, drink more fluid to prevent dehydration and follow a diet of soft, easy to digest foods, and taking small and frequent feedings. Apple juice and other fruit juices can restore some lost minerals. Binding foods such as bananas, noodles, hot cereals, cooked rice and rice water (congee) can stop diarrhea, form stools and supply needed vitamins B. Dairy products should be avoided. Chinese medicine regards diarrhea as due to cold dampness of spleen, heat dampness, indigestion, liver energy excess attacking the spleen, or spleen and kidney yang deficiency.
