Fish and Astragalus Soup 


General weakness after sickness or operation.


Promotes healing of wounds, detoxifies, promotes stronger bones and muscles, invigorates spleen and benefits qi.


  • Any fresh whole fish or Carp 生魚 - about 160 gm
  • Astragalus (huang qi) 黃耆– 40 gm
  • Chinese yam (Shan yao) 淮山– 20 gm

1.   Wash fish with salt, rinse clean and pat dry. Soak herbs for 30 minutes and rinse clean.

2.   Place all ingredients in a casserole with enough hot water to cover them and cover with lid. 

3.   Use the double-boil method to cook for 2 to 3 hours.

4.   When done, add salt and pepper to taste and serve straight from the casserole. Eat some fish with soup.


A course of treatment is to repeat the recipe for up to four or five times continuously, once a day or once every other day.


Bring the soup to boil in a pot for about 10 minutes and then transfer the cooking to a slow cooker and cook for 3 hours on high heat.

For patients who are extremely weak, it is important to use the indirect heat cooking methods to prevent introducing heatiness from the cooking to  the patients which can complicate the recovery process.
