Men's Health

Sexual health is perhaps of most concern to men. It has a lot to do with yang energy, kidney health and prostate health.

Impotent can be due to excessive sex, diabetes, high blood pressure, hormonal disorders, over or under-active thyroid, alcohol and drug abuse. The lack of certain minerals can also be the cause. The problem could be chronic or recurring with symptoms such as pale complexion, dizziness, and weakness in the lower back and legs. A rich oatmeal diet, raw egg yolk, iron, phosphorus and plenty of sleep can be helpful.

Chinese medicine treats impotent as deficiency of kidney fire and essence, spleen deficiency and kidney yang deficiency. Treatments include tonifying the kidneys and strengthening kidney yang. If impotence is caused by anxiety, treatment will be to nourish the heart and tranquilize the mind. Herbs such as eucommia, rehmannia, deer horn, ginseng, cistanche and epimedium are commonly used. For food cure, it is important to eat well to regain body strength first before taking tonifying yang herbs. Egg, leek, shrimp, beef and oyster are commonly used to nourish kidney and improve kidney essence. Cook sun-dried shrimp shells into broth to make soup can increase sexual performance and sperm counts.

Prostate enlargement

Prostate enlargement may be the most common health problem in men older than 60 years of age. A man's prostate gland usually starts to enlarge after he reaches 40 years of age. As the prostate grows larger, it may press on the urethra. This narrowing of the urethra can cause trouble with urination.

Many men with an enlarged prostate have no symptoms. If symptoms are present, they commonly include a weak stream of urine, difficulty starting urination, dribbling of urine especially after urinating, a sense of not fully emptying the bladder, leaking of urine, blood in urine, more frequent urination and a strong and sudden desire to urinate especially at night. In some cases, blockage may cause repeated urinary tract infection and gradually result in bladder or kidney damage. It may also cause a sudden inability to urinate - a medical emergency.

A variety of factors may be involved in causing prostate enlargement including androgen (male hormones), estrogen, growth factors and other cell signalling pathway. For men who eat late at night and drink a lot of beers before going to bed are more likely to become overweight with large belly and can cause prostate enlargement. Drinking too much water before bed can also cause bladder wall to thicken and affect prostate health. For prevention, it is best to restrict water intake two hours before bedtime.

Prostate cancer

Prostate cancer has become the most common cancer among men. Although prostate enlargement is not the cause of cancer, they have similar symptoms and problems. Obesity is one of the leading factors in whether a man develops prostate cancer or not.

Compounds in garlic have been shown to reduce risk of prostate cancer by up to 50 percent. Cranberry juice is proven to alleviate urinary tract infection. Pomegranate juice is believed to prevent prostate cancer. Eating a diet of whole foods with more fruits, vegetables and grains is good for overall and prostate health.
