Pig Kidney and Chestnut Soup


Weakness in loins and knees, frequent urination, frequent cough and short of breath.


Benefit kidneys, stomach and intestines; improve kidney functions.


  • Chestnut - 10
  • Pig kidney 豬腰 - one
  • Astragalus (huang qi) 黃耆- 20gm
  • Deng shen 黨參- 8gm
  • Goji-berry / Chinese wolfberry (gou ji zi) 枸杞子 - 16gm

1.   Remove shell and membrane of chestnuts. (Remove outer shell with a sharp knife. Make a few cuts on the surface of the membrane and put chestnuts in toaster oven to brown until membrane can be easily scraped off or put chestnut in boiling water for 5 minutes and remove membrane while still warm).

2.   Split kidney, wash with salt and put in boiling water for a couple of minutes, retrieve and rinse.

3.   Rinse herbs and put all ingredients in a soup pot with about 6 cups of water. Bring to a boil, remove foam and reduce heat to simmer for one hour with about 2 cups of soup left.

4.   Add salt to serve and eat content with soup.


Not suitable for people who are always constipated. Can also treat chronic bronchitis.
