Lotus Chicken Soup



Spleen and kidney deficiency manifested into dull and rough skin, wrinkled face and loose stools.


Lotus flower for nourishing skin and improves complexion. Lotus seed for strengthening spleen and relieves diarrhea; benefits kidney to preserve essence; nourishes heart and treating insomnia, amnesia, and palpitation. Lotus root for nourishing blood and stop all kinds of internal bleeding.

INGREDIENTS: (2 to 3 servings)

  • Chicken - half
  • Fresh lotus flower  蓮花  - one
  • Lotus seed (lien zi) 蓮子 – 30gm
  • Lotus root 蓮藕 – 200gm
  • Chinese jujube ./ red dates  - 4
  • Ginger – 2 slices

1.   Wash chicken and cut into quarters, remove skin and obvious fat. Put chicken in boiling water to boil for 3 to 5 minutes. Remove and rinse.

2.   Wash and cut lotus root into pieces. Rinse lotus seeds and dates.

3.   Put all ingredients, except the flower, in a soup pot with about 3 litres of water. Bring to a boil, remove foam and reduce heat to simmer for 2.5 hours to about 4 cups of soup (add boiling water to the cooking if necessary).

4.   Add fresh lotus flower to the cooking for another 10 minutes. Add salt to taste and serve. Eat some content with soup.  


It can be taken all year round. For people with pollen allergy, skip the flower.
