Dang Shen Whole Chicken


Lacking energy and appetite.


Improve appetite, strengthen the whole body, benefit spleen and kidney, promote yang energy and blood.


  • Chicken - one whole
  • Dang shen  黨參- 30gm
  • Pitted red dates 紅棗 - 6
  • Fresh ginger - 3 slices
  • Green onion - 2

1.     Split chicken open at the back. Remove internal organs and fat. Wash and cook in boiling water for 5 minutes, retrieve and rinse.

2.     Put chicken in a casserole.

3.     Rinse other ingredients and put around the chicken. Add boiling water to cover the whole chicken. Add one spoon of cooking wine and adequate salt and cover with lid.

4.     Place the casserole on a stainless steel cooling stand inside a pot or a wok with enough hot water at the bottom to reach up to the lower third of the casserole.

5.     Cover the pot or wok with lid and place it over medium-high heat and cook for 2 hours. Add hot water regularly to maintain the cooking and to prevent burning.

6.     Add seasoning (white pepper and sesame oil) to serve. Eat chicken with soup as main course of meal. 


Not suitable when having flu.


Bring the soup to a boil in a pot for about 10 minutes and transfer the cooking to a slow cooker and cook for 4 hours on high heat.
