Chinese Yam and Snail Soup


Yin deficiency manifested into blood deficiency with constant dizziness and poor vision.


Improve spleen function to promote blood, improve liver function and promote yin.

INGREDIENTS: (4 servings)

  • Chinese Yam (shan yao) 淮山 – 30gm
  • Goji-berry / Chinese Wolfberry  (gou ji zi) 枸杞子 – a handful
  • Longan Fruit 龍眼肉 - 6
  • Chinese Jujube / Red Date (da zao) 大棗 – 4 (seeded)
  • Pig Liver 豬肝 – 150gm
  • Dried snail 螺片 – 30gm or 4 fresh snails (put in boiling water to clean)
  • Ginger 生薑 - 3 slices
  • Citrus Peel (chen-pi) 陳皮 – one small piece (soaked and with white tissue scraped and removed)

1.   Soak yam and goji-berries for 20 minutes. Rinse clean.

2.   Wash pig liver with some salt and rinse. Cut liver into thin pieces.

3.   Rinse other ingredients.

4.   Put all ingredients in a soup pot with about 10 cups of water (about 2.5 litres).  Bring to a boil, remove foam and reduce heat to simmer for 2 hours (add boiling water to the cooking if necessary) to reduce water to half.

5.   Add salt to taste and serve.
